Midnight sun & Northern Lights...
Land of the Midnight Sun and the Northern Lights, the Finnish province of Lapland is one of the worlds most wild and unspoiled regions, sparsely populated with truly friendly and welcoming people. Blessed with wide open fells and hills, uninhabited forests, magnificent lakes as clear as crystal, quietly babbling brooks and foaming rapids, this region offers the tourist the holiday of a lifetime. Walking, canoeing, boating and fishing, horse riding, skiing and birdwatching - there are outdoor activities of every kind for a wonderful adventure holiday. The regions towns and villages are also interesting. Oulu province is a varied region, comprising the university town of Oulu, the wilder area of Kainuu, and the lovely Koillismaa area.
Oulu is a bustling, lively city on the west coast of Finland and is a centre of science, research and technology, offering a wide variety of culture and entertainment. There are restaurants and bars galore, and street musicians will serenade you if you go to one of the outdoor bars in the pedestrian section of Kirkkokatu. There is a wealth of cultural activities in Oulu, including many museums, art galleries, the Tietomaa Science Centre, and the botanical gardens. Around 200 kms north of Oulu, Kuusamo is a quiet small town which is the perfect base for touring this very special region of contrasts. With mountains and valleys, rivers, streams and rapids, you will never find such a wild and yet peaceful natural area.
Take a trip to the town of Rovaniemi, where you can enjoy museums, galleries, restaurants, and musical events such as the Jutajaiset folk music festival. Rovaniemi lies 8 kms south of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle in Lapland is the optimum position from which to view the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis as they are more properly named. They can be seen at most times of the year but are especially stunning during the winter months when there is no sunshine. It is difficult to describe the awesome beauty of these lights, which sometimes stretch for 2,000 kms across the horizon, so make sure to give yourself the experience of a lifetime.
